Coastal Drift up-date

Not part of my MA studies, but we haven't yet set up a special blog for our Hampton Court Flower Show garden.

We're currently working on the submission to the RHS selection panel. Adele and I have re-worked the presentation plan - allowing for the extra space we've been given.

You can also follow our journey on our sponsor Wyevale East Nurseries website.

We also have a Facebook page:

and if this isn't enough you can also follow us on Twitter!

Re-balancing the carbon cycle - Sketch Designs

Here is my latest attempt at the Theme Proposal Sketch Designs.

Re-balancing the carbon cycle at Temple Place/Victoria Embankment, London.

Delivered to class in a one-minute 'silent' presentation.

The main criticism here was that the images were perhaps too cartoon-like. I agree, but the quandry is meeting the brief, which asks us to use sketch-up as a 3D modelling tool to illustrate our ideas.

However, the tutors want us to use the before and after images, which seem to work best using photo-realistic representations.
So it becomes more of an exercise in photoshop, and I have to get better at blending the two together.

Now where are my pens and pencils?.......

A day out with Precious Chilli

Today I went out for the day with Neil to the Creating Landscapes Show at Capel Manor College.

It's the first event organised by the Landscape Juice Network - and is free to all visitors. We didn't go to any of the seminars, as we spent most of the time looking around the exhibition and having a chat with the exhibitors.

I was also pleased to meet my new friends at Wyevale East Nurseries, pictured below.

More on SUDS...Theme Project

Here is another presentation for my Theme Project Course.
This course deals with the design of outdoor space with regard to specific themes.

We are required to produce sketch designs on 4 themes - this week it's  SUDS - on a project site in London. For my site I chose Bernie Spain Gardens on London's South Bank.

Here I applied a SUDS system to the current park.

The presentation was delivered to the class, in a one minute timed session, without words - for constructive critique.... a la Brian Sewell.

Note - the brief for this project calls for sketches to be done in Sketch-up and then rendered in photoshop.  I'm quite keen on this technique...but feel my images are a bit too 'sketch-uppy'.
I could've spent more time on them in photoshop - but I ran out of time.

Some of my trees and plants are re-used from the perspectives I produced for the BA, which were plants and trees I painted in water colour with my own hands!

I just feel they need loosening up a bit.

Here's a sketch I made by tracing over the sketch-up model - and colouring in with pencils.

Theme Project - SUDS

Drainage can be sexy.

So here I am back at school... proper...the assignments are well under way and my first presentation involved a 5 minute seminar, to class, on Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) - Infiltration Techniques.

Here are some images of my presentation - notibly the work of Herbert Dreiseitl and Macfarlane Wilder.

Competition winners - Susan Willmott and Adele Ford

Wyevale East Student Design & Build Award 2011.
I've not won anything since 1977, at school, I won a math set for my Queen's Silver Jubilee Scrapbook. But along with my fellow graduate Adele Ford - our design won the competition to build a garden at Hampton Court 2012.
The design called 'Coastal Drift' followed a brief set by Wyevale East - and was to represent the growing environment of the coast of England, 4 miles from the sea. The garden is intended to represent part of a larger garden and offers a haven - a place to relax, unwind and drift...
Neeedless to say we're both thrilled and very excited about the project - and can't wait to get started.
